SUPERMAN/BATMAN: PUBLIC ENEMIES -- KEVIN CONROY

Kevin Conroy is returning to voice Batman in Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, but said his approach to the character is consistent to the one he's done since starting on Batman: The Animated Series.

"The character is the character. I established him 18 years ago," Conroy said during a recent interview at Comic-Con International. "Even though the visuals are different, the art is different, I have to remain true to the character.

"It's the same guy and, for me, it's the same performance. The artwork is different and that's someone else's job. "

Conroy said he's locked in to what he feels makes Batman popular.

"I think the reason Batman resonates with the audience so much and has for so long is he doesn't have any superpowers," Conroy said. "He's a mortal. He just has to use his wits. My sort of key to playing the role is that Bruce Wayne is the alter ego, and Batman is his true stuff. The performance is Bruce Wayne. And I think the audiences get that.

"We all have a personal self and a public self. Everyone has a persona they give to perform for the world. And Batman's persona is Bruce Wayne. I think the audience relates to that and having a secret identity that the world wouldn't understand.

"And I try to keep that honest through all the different incarnations of the show, whether it was Batman and Robin or the Justice League or Batman Beyond or now this movie. The animation may change, but you have to remain true to the character, true to the story of the character."

Other actors have recently voiced Batman, and Conroy said he respectfully tries to avoid their performances.

"Just because I don't like to be influenced and that happens very subtlety," he said. "You listen to something and you don't even realize how it affects what you're doing."

Voice director Andrea Romano said that bringing back Conroy -- and Tim Daly as Superman and Clancy Brown as Lex Luthor -- was natural.

"It felt right. We've had the occassion to use other actors, but there's something about the fact that when we first cast these roles, we felt so good about these voices actors," she said.

Superman/Batman: Public Enemies is scheduled for a Sept. 29 release.

MICHAEL USLAN WRITES PUREHEART FOR ARCHIE

Archie Comics is again teaming with Michael Uslan -- the writer of the "Archie Marries Veronica" -- for a series of five specials reimagining Pureheart the Powerful, the Archie as a superhero concept.

"We're not just talking one super-hero here," said Uslan, who produced The Spirit and is an executive producer on the Batman franchise.

"Archie will be joined by Betty as Superteen, Jughead as Captain Hero, Reggie as Evilheart, Jr., and wait'll you see the super-versions of Veronica, Dilton and Moose! Surprises galore are just ahead!

"Pureheart and Pureheart's Emergency Patrol will debut in a series of five one-shot comic books that bring back to life the five historic super-hero titles that launched The Archie Comics, originally known as MLJ Comics, back in the Golden Age of the 1930's and 40's."

The one-shots will launch early next year.
