IDW PUBLISHING FIRST LOOKS

DYNAMITE ACQUIRES TOTAL RECALL

Dynamite Entertainment has announced plans to publish Total Recall comic books, based on the Carolco Pictures film released in 1990.

The film starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone and was based on the Philip K. Dick short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale."

The rights to publish a Total Recall comic book series were obtained from StudioCanal S.A. under a licensing agreement negotiated by The Licensing Group Ltd.

"I am thrilled to announce that Dynamite has acquired the rights to Total Recall from StudioCanal," said Dynamite president Nick Barrucci. "We will give this property the same tender care that we have given to so many of our other successful science-fiction properties such as Battlestar Galactica, Stargate and Buck Rogers."

Here's how Dynamite describes the property:

"The story line is centered on a unsophisticated construction worker, Douglas Quaid, and the aftermath of his visit to REKALL, a company offering vacations for the mind. The Rekall vacation triggers a mind plant in Quaid's brain, leading him to discover that he is a freedom fighter from Mars who has been relocated to Earth. Quaid attempts to restore order, and reverse the corrupt influence of commercial powers, despite multiple challenges, not the least of which are his wife's multiple attempts to kill him: attacks from thugs who want him dead; and his own confusion as to who he really is. Quaid conquers the corrupt hold of the Mars based mining company restoring order to the Mars community."

ROLANDO MALLADA EXCLUSIVE TO APE ENTERTAINMENT

Ape Entertainment has announced it has signed an exclusive contract with Rolando "Rolo" Mallada, an artist from Uruguay.

Having previously worked on the publisher's Teddy Scares line, Mallada will now take on a number of projects for Ape, including the soon-to-be-released Pocket God, as well as an unannounced series set to debut in 2011.

"Everyone who sees his work is in awe of what he's capable of, and given the books he's set to work on, mark my words, this guy will be a household name within a year," said Ape founder and co-publisher David Hedgecock.

According to Ape, Mallada has been "integral" in the publisher's acquiring the Dreamworks Animation license, a line that includes comic books based on Shrek and The Penguins of Madagascar.

"I'm always trying to improve as an artist, and signing an exclusive contract with Ape, a company that is rising in the ranks in their own right, is a dream come true," Mallada said.

Rolo's first published work under the exclusive signing, Pocket God #1, will appear digitally on iVerse later this month, and then in print (with extra, never-before-seen content) in August.

DC COMICS NEWS ROUNDUP

DC Comics has announced that J.T. Krul is the new writer of Teen Titans.

"They are one of the premiere teams in all of comics and have a rich pedigree of incredible stories by amazing creators," Krul said. "To be able to add to that heritage is an honor in every respect.

"Although I've written this family of characters before, the Teen Titans were either dealing the horrors of dead friends and foes coming back to haunt them, coping with dissolving team ranks, or suffering from the utter despair over losing limbs and loved ones. I'm eager to get the chance to tell brighter stories that build the team up stronger than ever."
