COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN AND HIS AVENGING FRIENDS PANEL

SAN DIEGO -- Marvel Comics staged its Spider-Man panel on Saturday at Comic-Con International.

Panelists included Antony Jonhston, Steve Wacker, Rick Remender, Mark Waid, Greg Rucka, Nick Spencer, Zeb Wells and Axel Alonso.

Following are highlights:

* A video of Dan Slott was shown, in which he set up Spider-Island that begins in Amazing Spider-Man #666 and also is featured in various tie-ins. New York is overrun with citizens with spider-powers.

* Covers from Spider-Island show that both Mary Jane and Jonah Jameson displaying spider-powers.

* Nick Spencer, writer of Spider-Island Cloak & Dagger, said that he asked to work on the characters right when he got to Marvel . He loves writing the book about a couple and he's hoping to write them more beyond Spider-Island.

* Wacker on Spider-Island: Spider-Girl: "Part of her past is coming back, not really to haunt her but to viciously attack her." The mini-series picks up after the scene at the end of the Spider-Girl title.

* Wacker on Spider-Island Avengers, by Chris Yost and Mike McKone: "I just wanted a book where Frog Man shows up and declares he's in the Avengers."

The Spider-Island: Deadly Foes one-shot splits time between the new Hobgoblin and Jackal. The Spider-Woman story will also feature the Thing.

The Spider-Island tie-in issues of Venom will see Anti-Venom as well as a culmination to longtime problems between Flash Thompson and his father in what Wacker said will be a very personal story for Flash.

* Lan Medina will be the new artist on Venom with #9.

* Avenging Spider-Man will be written by Zeb Wells, with art by Joe Madureira, teaming Spidey with members of the Avengers.

* Greg Rucka on The Punisher: "There is nothing broken or complicated about Frank Castle. He kills bad people. The goal of the book is to stay out of his way and let him do what he does. What interests me is his drive and how it affects everybody around him."

* Lee Weeks drew an issue of Iron Age and is now working on a Daredevil project.

* According to Rucka, Punisher #1 opens with a wedding caught in a gang crossfire and will echo the death of Frank Castle's family. Castle doesn't talk for the first three issues, and Rucka said he will endeavor to integrate the character into the Marvel Universe.
