TRANSFORMERS/G.I. JOE ONGOING

IDW Publishing has announced an ongoing Transformers/G.I. Joe ongoing series to begin next summer. The series will be written by Tom Scioli and John Barber, with art by Scioli.

Here's how IDW describes the book:

"Based on the iconic Hasbro brands, this stand-alone series is set to explore the intriguing encounter between these starkly different teams. Cosmic in scale, the series will utilize Scioli's unique artwork to traverse the perils of space and pit the G.I. Joe team against the ominous threats of Cybertron. Featuring the characters synonymous with both Transformers and G.I. Joe this will be a team-up for the ages!"

"This is a dream project for me," Barber said, "and I'm blown away by the imagination and the unique take that Tom Scioli is bringing to this project. It harkens back to classic comic traditions -- and to the origins of the Transformers and G.I. Joe characters -- but feels constantly, irrepressibly new!"

"This feels like the comic I was born to make," Scioli said. "We're asking big questions. Is war an inevitable condition of life? What is free will? What is the future of man and machine as the line between them becomes increasingly blurred? The G.I. Joe team is trained to deal with dangerous situations and this is the ultimate test of their training. The Transformers characters push the boundaries of what shapes life can take in this infinite universe of ours. Perhaps it will be a machine that teaches us what it is to be human."

MARVEL COMICS ANNOUNCEMENTS

Marvel Comics made several announcements at New York Comic Con on Friday. Following is a roundup, and look for more news and images later on Friday:

* Ghost Rider is joining the Thunderbolts with #20 in January, by Charles Soule and Carlo Barberi. The title of the arc is "No Mercy."

* "The Trial of Jean Grey" is a six-part story that starts in January in Uncanny X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy, by Brian Michael Bendis, Stuart immonen and Sara Pichelli. "It is safe to say that Jean Grey is still here, and now a lot of people know about it," Bendis said. "Once the word gets out that Jean Grey, who was once host to one of the most formidable and destructive cosmic forces in the entire galaxy, [is back], there are people -- major players - will want to hold her accountable for some of that destruction."

* Richard Isanove's four-issue arc of Savage Wolverine starts with January's #14 will be set in late 1933. "My dad was a big Steinbeck fan and transmitted that love to me. Last year, I read my all-time favorite, Of Mice and Men, to my daughter and she was in tears at the end. Not a tiny teardrop: unstoppable sobbing," Isanove said. "Savage Wolverine is supposed to explore different facets of Wolverine's character. I wanted to see him deal with a situation where things kept going from bad to worse, so why not in the most desperate of times. I figured I might as well get my inspiration from one of the greatest storytellers, one that can still make children cry 80 years later."

* All-New X-Factor is by Peter David and Carmine DiGiandomenico. "My work tends to be rooted in the real world except for the occasional battles about hell," David said. "And the corporate presence in the real work is just everywhere. I was fascinated by Google because it's in so many things and I thought about it, and why wouldn't a corporation get into superheroes?"

* There will be an Uncanny X-Force/Cable and X-Force crossover, "Vendetta," that will be published weekly in January.

BRIEFLY

LAPHAM RIDES DARK HORSE: Dark Horse Comics has announced two creator-owned series from David Lapham: Juice Squeezers (debuting Jan. 1) and Kid McAlister (debuting May 2).

Following are descriptions for the books:

"Juice Squeezers follows a covert group of tweens who form the main line of defense for the residents of Weeville against an army of giant bugs. The only ones who can fit into the cramped subterranean battlefield, the aptly named Juice Squeezers keep the endless swarm of bugs from overrunning the city. That is, until a new kid moves to town and threatens to awaken a dormant bug population."

"Lapham weaves a western sci-fi tale with Kid McAlister, which follows a 50-year-old cowboy trapped in the body of a 12-year-old, as he returns home to Yuma, Arizona, after a long stint on the road. It's not easy to stay hidden for long when you're an eternally young “Electric Cowboy” and the best darn bull rider on the circuit. Also, Kid's the only one who can see the body-snatching aliens taking over the populace, and he's the only one who can stop them from taking over the world!"

VERY BRIEFLY: Fred Van Lente is taking over as writer of Dark Horse Comics' Conan the Barbarian with #26 in March.
