STAR WARS REBELS: KANAN

Lucasfilm has unveiled Kanan, a Jedi Knight voiced by Freddie Prinze, Jr. featured in the upcoming Star Wars Rebels animated series on Disney XD.

For a video featurette on the character, CLICK HERE.

Kanan is a less traditional Force-wielder than fans are used to seeing. He carries a blaster, is a little sarcastic, and keeps his past a secret. "I like to call Kanan the cowboy Jedi," said executive producer Dave Filoni.

In Star Wars Rebels, set between Episode III and IV, Kanan has been underground for years, evading the Empire. If the Imperials become aware of his existence "he's going to get killed," said art director Kilian Plunkett. He still has his lightsaber, but no longer uses it for fear of revealing his true identity -- and has ultimately forsaken the ways of the Jedi Order.

Star Wars Rebels will show Kanan's journey as he rediscovers himself, just as a rebellion begins to form against the Empire. According to Filoni, "He's a gunslinger that needs to put the gun away and pick up the sword again, and fight for noble causes and selfless causes."

Star Wars Rebels is scheduled to premiere in the fall as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel and will be followed by a series on Disney XD channels around the world.

MARVEL COMICS' CYCLOPS SERIES

Marvel Comics has announced a May launch for Cyclops, featuring the young Scott Summers in a series by writer Greg Rucka and artist Russel Dauterman!

Here's how Marvel describes the book:

"Spinning directly out of the blockbuster All-New X-Men crossover 'The Trial of Jean Grey' comes the very first ongoing solo series for one of the time-travelling Original X-Men. After clashing with the Shi'ar on the edge of deep space, Scott Summers is about to encounter the last person he'd ever expect to meet -- his father!

"Long thought dead, Corsair, leader of that intergalactic band of misfits the Starjammers, has returned! And he’s got a new recruit in the form of his son, young Cyclops himself! Scott Summers is leaving the X-Men behind to stay in space amd learn a few valuable lessons from dad: 1) How to shave, 2) How to talk to women, 3) How to steal a Badoon spaceship."

"This book is everything Marvel is about -- high stakes, intergalactic action, adventure and intrigue with the emotional core of a father and son who have to repair their relationship," said editor Tom Brennan. "Corsair and Cyclops are both in a bold new world – a man back from the dead and a teen out of time. They need each other now, and the universe needs them more than ever."

Alexander Lozano provides the cover for the first issue.

BRIEFLY

IMAGE CROSSOVER:Image Comics has set a May 28 release for Chew/Revival #1, crossover from Chew creators John Layman and Rob Guillory and Revival creators Tim Seeley and Mike Norton. In the story, Tony Chu heads into rural Wisconsin, where the dead don't stay at rest and the living do their best to cope.

"In my head I've got a checklist of all my favorite books I want Chew to crossover with, if for no other reason than it gives me an opportunity to visit a world that isn't mine, that I'd nonetheless like to play in," said Layman. "Revival is a the top of the list, and I'm stoked I've got the opportunity to send Tony Chu to visit. It's a fun opportunity to check out both books for less than a single issue of each."

"When John proposed the idea, I told Tim, 'No way. That will never work,'" Norton said. "After a while I thought about it and went back to Tim and said, "Yeah, no way, that will never work!' But then, I thought even more on it. I think the way we're doing it is reminiscent of when indie books of the '80s would cross companies and appear in each book even though you'd never expect those universes to collide. It's just a matter of loosening up and having some fun."

Seeley added, "Chew showed us all that there was a place for quality off-kilter series, and we're excited to have the cast of our 'rural noir' meet up with America's favorite cibopath. I think we've figured out a great way to take advantage of the ‘What The Hell' factor of crossing over two very different worlds that'll make for a great read."

"Honestly, even I was shocked how well the two titles gelled together," said Guillory. "It's a really, really fun experiment that will surprise fans of both books, I think."
