IDW PUBLISHING'S STAR TREK PROJECTS

IDW Publishing has announced two Star Trek comic book projects for later this year.

This October will see the release of Star Trek #50, marking one of the longest-running Star Trek comic-book series by any publisher. Mike Johnson continues his stint with the anniversary issue that kicks off a three-part adventure that will introduce the classic "Mirror/Mirror: storyline into the new film-based universe.

Star Trek #50 will also boast bonus content, including behind-the-scenes looks at the entire 50-issue run, along with hints about where the series is going. It will all be surrounded by a wraparound cover by series artist Tony Shasteen.

In December, IDW is launching a new mini-series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The comic follows Kirk, Spock, Uhura and some surprise faces while they are still cadets-in-training at Starfleet Academy, set in the period just prior to the opening of the 2009 film. Readers will also meet the all-new "current day" class of Starfleet cadets, full of compelling young characters from all over the galaxy.

The series is written by Johnson and Ryan Parrot, with art by Derek Charm.

"The fan enthusiasm surrounding Starfleet Academy, much like Harry Potter's Hogwarts, or X-Men's Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, shows that the educational lives of our most beloved heroes makes for fantastic stories," said editor Sarah Gaydos. "I am so excited to flesh out a new chapter in the lives of the Enterprise crew, while introducing you to a great new team of recruits - - ready to boldly go!"

KUBERT, JANSON ON THE DARK KNIGHT III

DC Entertainment has announced that artists Andy Kubert and Klaus Janson will be joining Frank Miller Brian Azzarello for The Dark Knight III: The Master Race, the epic conclusion to Miller's trilogy.

The Dark Knight III: The Master Race will be eight 32-page issues, published monthly. Within each issue, there will be a special 16-page Dark Knight Universe comic affixed in the center. Each Dark Knight Universe comic will feature a rotating cast of special guest artists and characters.

“We went into this knowing that we had to give fans more,” said Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, DC co-publishers, in a statement. "We're pulling out all the stops to deliver an amazing conclusion to this exciting body of work. We hope it inspires the next generation of writers and artists, the way it has already inspired us."

Kubert said, "Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello have crafted such an incredible story for DKIII, as I am truly honored to be associated with them, this project, and Klaus Janson. We, along with the fans, are in for a great ride!"

"Any opportunity to work with Frank Miller is a happy occasion for me," said Janson. "When we add the talents of Brian Azzarello and Andy Kubert to the mix, we have the ingredients to achieve something truly memorable. This will be amazing!"

The series is expected to begin late this fall.

FRANKEN-MINI: Dynamite Entertainment has announced an October launch for Dean Koontz's Frankenstein: Storm Surge, a six-issue mini-series written by Chuck Dixon, with art by Andres Ponce.

Here's how the story is described:

"Frankenstein: Storm Surge #1 continues the re-imagining of 'The Modern Prometheus' seen in Koontz's previous Dynamite series, focusing on cast members Victor and Erika. While healing from a beating she suffered at the hands of Victor Helios - once Dr. Frankenstein - and her own maker, Erika Five decides to leave the comfort of her glassed-in porch and bottle of cognac to go exploring into Victor's secret home lab, which she believes is an antechamber to something more sinister. With the help of the bodiless head Karloff and his disembodied hand, Erika finds a secret lab and within sees experiments revealing Victor's attempts to do more than create a race of super-immortals... and a mirror-like portal to another universe, one of infinite realities Victor is trying to bridge for his own terrifying reasons!"
