MARVEL/ABC NEWS' MADAYA MOM

ABC News and Marvel Comics have announced Madaya Mom, an original digital comic detailing the harrowing true story of one family's struggle to survive in the besieged Syrian town of Madaya.

In January 2016, ABC News profiled a family trapped inside Madaya, communicating with a mother of five through texts and phone conversations to capture the bleak outlook that she and her family faced every day. ABC News posted daily updates from the mother, detailing her descent into anger and despair as she was reduced to breaking apart their furniture for firewood and boiling leaves for food. Since Madaya has been besieged by forces loyal to the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad, the family has been trapped there for over 14 months and has struggled to stay alive as many starve to death in what is effectively an open-air prison.

Using her own words, ABC News and Marvel created a wholly original digital comic book and produced a graphic documentary to bring the story to life. ABC News has concealed the identity of the family for their own protection.

"(The Mother) agreed to speak with ABC because she wanted her story -- and the story of her neighbors -- to be known; however, with no visuals coming out of Madaya, our team spent a considerable amount of time imagining the ways we could illustrate her powerful journey," said ABC News digital executive producer Dan Silver. "With their storied history of innovative and emotional storytelling, we knew that our colleagues at Marvel would bring this story to life in a truly unique and expressive way."

"This meticulously researched collaboration between ABC and Marvel goes where cameras can't and provides visuals to the true story of Madaya Mom -- a story that needs to be seen and told," said Axel Alonso, Marvel's editor-in-chief.

DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT NEWS ROUNDUP

Dynamite Entertainment has announced a January launch for KISS: The Demon, from writers Amy Chu and Erik Burnham, with art by Eman Cassallos.

The book will be feature feature the band's iconic bass player and co-founder, Gene Simmons, in his own miniseries.

Here's how the series is described:

"Before Blackwell, before Morpheus, there was the MUSIC. In a small town in Iowa, three young KISS fans meet at a concert and form their own band, unaware they are about to embark on a journey that will not only change their lives, but also the fate of the world. A prequel to the ongoing series!"

"KISS has never just been a band. Our comic book history has been long and proud and has spanned decades, and now with Dynamite Entertainment, we intend to go even further," Simmons said. "When we get a great writer and artist team, we know better than to micromanage. We stay out of the way. Everyone involved wanted to take our personas and do classic KISS comic books, and with Amy Chu writing, this will be an adventure the fans will absolutely love."

WOOD ON CARTER: Dynamite Entertainment has announced that Brian Wood will lend his storytelling skill alongside Alex Cox on John Carter in 2017.

"Taking on a classic literary icon like John Carter is no small thing, and working with Alex Cox to find a direction that both honors the past and looks into the future has been a great challenge, one that we both are enjoying immensely," Wood said.

"The John Carter series is one of the all-time great sci-fi/fantasy epics, and having the opportunity to play in that sandbox is just awesome. Brian's concept is unlike any John Carter story to date, but with a lot of reverence for the world that Burroughs built," Cox said. "Beyond that, we're drawing on everything from Jodorowsky to Jesse Marsh to John Wayne to make this story as cool as possible. I think people are going to love it -- old school superfans, and also people who have no idea what a Rykor is."

FELIX LEITER SERIES: James Robinson steps into the world of James Bond in an all-new miniseries, authorized by Ian Fleming Publications Ltd, centering around the character's CIA ally and friend, Felix Leiter.

Aaron Campbell will draw Felix Leiter's first-ever comic book series, slated for January.

In the new series, Felix Leiter -- now operating as an independent investigator -- finds himself in Japan, tracking down a beautiful Russian spy from his past. But when the mission takes a turn for the worse, he will discover that there are more deadly schemes taking shape in Tokyo... and beyond.

"Felix Leiter is a fantastically interesting character," Robinson said. "He combines the best elements of the James Bond universe with the dark alleys and darker deeds of crime fiction. A private detective, done with a life of spying, who is constantly dragged back into that world, like it or not. I'm excited for readers to see the tale of intrigue and big action that I've dreamed up for Felix."

Felix Leiter first appeared alongside James Bond in Ian Fleming's very first novel, Casino Royale, published in 1953. He would later make appearances in Live and Let Die, Diamonds Are Forever, Goldfinger, Thunderball, and The Man with the Golden Gun, making him one of Bond's most frequent allies throughout the books. Originally a CIA operative, Leiter has begun to work for Pinkertons as a private detective when Bond encounters him in Diamonds Are Forever, although he is hired by the Agency for specific missions in the later books. In Live and Let Die, Felix is the victim of a shark attack in which he loses part of his right arm and left leg, sporting prosthetic limbs during his subsequent appearances. In this new miniseries, we meet Leiter post-injuries, and working independently from the CIA at his own detective agency.

ANIMAL JAM: Dynamite Entertainment continues to expand upon the success of all-ages titles like Grumpy Cat and Boo: The World's Cutest Dog with the announcement of plans to bring Animal Jam to comics!

Animal Jam is a safe and exciting online playground for kids who love animals and the outdoors. The comic book will debut in 2017.
