THE CW'S 2017-2018 SEASON

The CW has released its comics-inspired lineup for the 2017-2018 season.

Here's how the show is described:

"Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a man wrestling with a secret. As the father of two daughters and principal of a charter high school that also serves as a safe haven for young people in a New Orleans neighborhood overrun by gang violence, he is a hero to his community. Nine years ago, Pierce was a hero of a different sort. Gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, he used those powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning.

"However, after too many nights with his life on the line, and seeing the effects of the damage and loss that his alter ego was inflicting on his family, he left his super-hero days behind and settled into being a principal and a dad. Choosing to help his city without using his superpowers, he watched his daughters Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) grow into strong young women, even though his marriage to their mother, Lynn (Christine Adams), suffered. Almost a decade later, Pierce's crime-fighting days are long behind him...or so he thought. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, and those he cares about in the crosshairs of the menacing local gang The One Hundred, Black Lightning returns -- to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community."

Based on the characters from DC, Black Lightning is from Berlanti Productions and Akil Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti, Salim Akil. Mara Brock Akil and Sarah Schechter.

MARVEL COMICS' STAR WARS: JEDI OF THE REPUBLIC - MACE WINDU #1

Marvel Comics has announced an August 23 launch for Star Wars: Jedi of the Republic - Mace Windu, a five-issue series by writer Matt Owens and artist Denys Cowan.

Here's how Marvel describes the book:

"One of the most accomplished and storied members of the Jedi High Council, his wisdom and combat prowess are legendary. Now, in this new story, readers will get to see Mace Windu lead his Jedi into battle...and face the ultimate test of leadership!"

"No matter how well trained for battle the Jedi are, having to actually put those skills to use is another thing entirely. The preferred tools of the Jedi are diplomacy, harmony, education, peace. Now they find themselves leading troops on battlefields across the galaxy, Owens said. "They're going to have a lot of thoughts about this. Is this really the way to peace? Is this the position I should be taking? Is this really the path the Jedi should be walking down. Doubt is understandable, but what each individual does with that doubt is very telling of who they are and where they will end up."

Covers for the first issue are Jesus Saiz, Rahzzah, Javier Rodriguez and Russell Dauterman, with animation and movie variants available.

VALIANT'S WAR MOTHER MINI-SERIES

Valiant Entertainment has announced an August 22 launch for War Mother, a four-issue series by writer Fred Van Lente and artist Stephen Segovia.

Here's how Valiant describes the series:

"Two millennia from today, Earth is not the hospitable home we once we knew. Ravaged by an endless onslaught of war, disaster, and time, the world is littered with desolate badlands, fortified kingdoms, and secretive enclaves where humanity still clings to life... Enclaves like The Grove -- Earth's last known repository of scientific knowledge and bioengineered prosperity. Now, under the leadership of the lone protector called War Mother and her sentient sniper rifle, the denizens of The Grove face a critical choice: remain where they are and die, or find a new land and flourish. Can War Mother lead her people out of isolation and reignite the fires of a dying planet? And even if she can locate the distant citadel she seeks, can she fight back the horrors and perverse monstrosities that lurk just beyond her doorstep?"

"She's the classic immovable object or unstoppable force," Van Lente said. "I think the people around her and Flaco -- her talking, sentient sniper rifle -- are probably more hesitant or filled with self-doubt than [War Mother] ever has been... So Ana finds herself in a weird position -- she's the only person from the Grove that's ever left it, but now she's also the leader."

War Mother #1 covers are by David Mack, Clayton Crain, Kano, Jen Bartel and Monika Palosz. Shown here are Mack's covers for all four issues.
