BOOM! STUDIOS' CODA

BOOM! Studios has announced a May launch for Coda, a 12-issue series from writer Simon Spurrier and artist Matías Bergara.

Here's how BOOM! describes the series:

"In the aftermath of an apocalypse which wiped out nearly all magic from a once-wondrous fantasy world, an antisocial former bard named Hum seeks a way to save the soul of his wife with nothing but a foul-tempered mutant unicorn and his wits to protect him...but is unwillingly drawn into a brutal power struggle which will decide forever who rules the weird wasteland."

"Coda is the sort of post-apocalyptic story which thumbs its nose at miserable grimhook sensibilities and launches itself, cackling, into fields of weird growth and springtime ideas," Spurrier said. "It's the sort of relentless kaleidoscope of visual wonders and worries that only Matías could provide. Yes, it's a survivalist story. Yes, it's about saddle bandits and dragon-corpses and endless wasteland chases with hexed steeds and pedigree ogres instead of cars. Yes, it's about a curmudgeonly loner trying to find his lost love, with only a foul tempered mutant pentacorn to keep him company. But most of all it's about making the most of the morning after the night before, and knowing that with every death -- in this case the mercy killing of the entire exhausted High Fantasy genre -- comes wondrous new life."

"Coda is the window we're opening for you, dear reader, to gaze into a world of strange and post-magical fantasy - a story unlike anything you and I have read before," Bergara. "My most insane and colorful ideas are flowing out of my hands as I read what Si has been creating in his mind and I can't wait for you to see what this is."

Coda #1 will be an oversized debut issue, with 40 pages of story content and additional backmatter at the same $3.99 price point as each issue of the series. This first issue also features a wraparound main cover by Bergara, along with variants by Jae Lee and Jeff Stokely.

BRIEFLY

X-O STORY ARC: Valiant Entertainment has announced a May 23 launch for "Barbarians," a new story arc beginning in X-O Manowar #15 by writer Matt Kindt and artist Trevor Hairsine.

Here's how Valiant describes the arc:

"As Harbinger Wars 2 besieges the Valiant Universe -- and X-O Manowar along with it -- Aric of Dacia cannot escape the flames that now threaten his future or the shadows that cloud his past. Before space... Before the armor... Return to the apex of Visigoth conquest as a younger, brasher Aric and a sword-wielding grifter set off on a continent-spanning quest for fortune, glory, and power! From the bloodstained sands of the gladiatorial arena to the dunes of the Arabian Desert, meet the man who would become the warrior-king of an alien civilization -- and our own world's most powerful hero -- as he sets out to seize his destiny once upon a time in a land of faraway kings and unrepentant conquerors!"

"I wanted to try to do something a little different than we’ve seen in past event books that crossover with other books and become these massive unwieldy narratives," Kindt said. "So instead of getting a double-dose of X-O Manowar during Harbinger Wars 2 and in his own book, I thought it would be more interesting to have him take on a larger role in the Harbinger Wars book and then have a contrasting tale taking place in his own title -- one that tells a story of him as a Visigoth in Rome -- that would both inform his past self and also serve to work in harmony with Harbinger Wars 2. Two stories that can be read independently of one another, but also work together in this crazy harmonic way if you’re reading both. Both storylines are standalone and also...not."

NEW GOTHAM: Fox has released the following description for "PIeces of a Broken Mirror," the spring debut of Gotham premiering on Thursday, March 1:

"Gordon is called to the scene after The Toy Maker is hired to assassinate one of Gotham's doctors. Lee Thompkins begins to try to rebuild the Narrows, with Nygma as her partner. Meanwhile, Alfred's new life in the Narrows becomes complicated and Ivy (guest-star Peyton List) reveals her new persona to Selina,"
