BOOM STUDIOS' BY NIGHT

BOOM! Studios has announced a June 13 launch for By Night #1, a 12-issue monthly series from writer John Allison and artist Christine Larsen.

Here's how BOOM! describes the book:

"Aspiring documentarian (and actual chemistry major) Jane has recently reunited with her former best friend Heather, amateur urban explorer. When a trip into an abandoned industrial building leads them to another world, their plan begins to unfold -- create a documentary about the world and become filthy, filthy rich. The other side of the portal is filled with monsters, magic and a chance for a whole new life. All they have to do is step through..."

"By Night combines my love of Fringe, the X-Files, Jon Ronson documentaries and long reads about the collapse of post-Industrial western society," Allison said. "It's about going home after college and seeing your home town, and your old friends, through opened eyes. I should also add that it will contain plenty of jokes, dads, mild peril and ludicrous beasts that will almost certainly obscure any lofty intellectual ambitions I might have. And I'm so excited to be working with Christine Larsen on the book, a true star with pencil and pen. Readers are going to love her art."

"John has written a story with everything I like: interesting female protagonists, strange creatures, urban decay, and sharp humor," Larsen said.

BRIEFLY

GARFIELD RETURNS: BOOM! Studios has announced a June launch for Garfield: Homecoming, a four-issue series from writer Scott Nickel and various artists, including Sara Talmadge in the first issue.

Here's how BOOM! describes the story:

"Feeling mistreated and unappreciated by Jon, Garfield embarks on a journey for a new home and, along the way, meets up with a clown who works in an old-timey travelling circus. Convinced that this is the place for him, Garfield becomes part of the act. Wait. What is that cannon for?"

"Putting Garfield on the road in Garfield: Homecoming allows him to meet a variety of new characters -- both friend and foe -- and his journey takes him to some interesting and unexpected places," Nickel said. "We hope fans enjoy the ride."

The first issue features a cover by Andy Hirsch and Talmadge.

FRIDAY BOX OFFICE: A Wrinkle in Time has dislodged Black Panther from the top of the box office -- at least for one day -- outpace in the Marvel Studios movie, $10.2 million to $9.9 million.

Friday's total pushed Black Panther to a domestic total of $530.8 million. The movie should pass Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($532.1 million) and The Dark Knight ($534.8 million) this weekend and move into seventh place all time.

X-MEN ARTIFACT: IDW Publishing has announced a July release for John Byrne's X-Men Artifact Edition, a 12-inch x 17-inch Artist's Edition style book featuring more than 100 pages of Byrne's X-Men work, each and every one scanned from the rare and valuable original art.

"Even after all these years, it's the X-Men work I did with Chris (Claremont) and Terry (Austin) that still resonates the most with fans," Byrne said. "Hopefully when you all see the pages in this format you'll still feel the same way!"

WIIG IN WONDER WOMAN: Kristen Wiig will play Cheetah in the Wonder Woman sequel, director Patty Jenkins announced. "So incredibly lucky to welcome the sensationally talented Kristen Wiig to our Wonder Woman family. Can't wait to finally work with one of my favorites. And SO excited by what we have planned," Jenkins tweeted.
