OFFBEATS LAUNCHES IN FEBRUARY

Garden Knights Studios has announced a Feb. 27 launch for Offbeats, a four-issue series from Antarctic Press.

Here's how the book is described:

"Created by Tom Sacchi and John Ward, Offbeats is the tale of Jim, a lowly mechanic who flees to the Big Apple in search of a new life as a writer but instead finds himself caught between a hard-nosed police force and the mob. Jim must team up with small-time hustler Booker to save Booker's sister from the mob, and stay one step ahead of the police."

The book features artwork from Giles Crawford, colors from Dan Thompson and Lee Milewski and lettering from Henry Bajaras.

The unusual juxtaposition of noir storytelling with a distinctly Franco-Belgian art style was a deliberate choice, Sacchi said.

"I've had a love affair with the Belgian comic scene since I was a teenager. I just love how the Belgian creators can use cartoony characters in very real settings, coupled with real life situations. I really dig this contrast."

"I love dark, moody tales set in this era, but I felt this was a well-trodden landscape," Ward said. "The challenge was to create something that hit all the familiar story beats but somehow felt fresh, and I think the cartoon style really works in this instance."

"I try to only work on projects I enjoy in some way," Crawford said. "And jazz, gangsters and 1950's cities are all things I like to draw. It's a fast-paced, fun story."

RALPH NO. 1 AT THE BOX OFFICE

Ralph Breaks the Internet topped the domestic box office over the weekend with a projected $55.6 million total -- $84.4 million since opening on Wednesday.

Creed II was second with $55.8 million, and Dr. Seuss' The Grinch was third with $30.2 million, pushing its total to $180.4 million.

Venom brought in $0.8 million, pushing its total to $211.7 million.

Venom is now 27th among movies featuring Marvel Comics characters.
