JAMES BOND: LIVE AND LET DIE

Dynamite Entertainment has released details and images from James Bond: Live and Let Die, a graphic novel adaptation of Ian Fleming's second Bond book.

Due in September, the hardcover is written by Van Jensen, with art by Kewber Baal and a cover by Fay Dalton.

Here's how the book is described:

"Bond is at first sent across the Atlantic to The City That Never Sleeps to investigate Mr. Big, an agent of the Secret Service-opposed SMERSH. Fan-favorite CIA agent Felix Leiter is brought in to help, as the two uncover a plot full of voodoo and deadly sea creatures... There is also the unforgettable 'Bond girl' -- the beautiful and talented tarot reader Solitaire."

"Live and Let Die is an intense sprint, full of huge action and terrifying villains," Jensen said. "It's both a mystery and a thriller, as Bond digs into the world of Mr. Big and fights to survive against sharks, and even a very hungry octopus. To work in the world that Ian Fleming created is an incredible honor. This was a particularly fun project, given how grandiose it is, full of intricate action set pieces and fun visuals. Translating the novel to comics was all about staging those beats in the most fun, intense way possible. Kewber has been a perfect partner in that work. The underwater battles particularly are the highlight of the book, but every page has something wonderful."

Baal said, "Drawing James Bond is a milestone for me! James Bond is one of the greatest characters in literature and one of the biggest movie franchises. Working with Van is awesome! His scripts are detailed, but with a fluidity that makes the art come naturally!"

STRANGE SKIES OVER EAST BERLIN

BOOM! Studios has announced an Oct. 2 launch of Strange Skies Over East Berlin, a new four-issue limited series from writer Jeff Loveness and artist Lisandro Estherren, featuring cover art by Evan Cagle.

Here's how BOOM! describes the book:

"It's 1973, and Herring, a disillusioned American spy, has spent the entire Cold War infiltrating the inner circles of East German intelligence for a cause he barely believes in anymore. He's seen everything and done anything his government asked but his latest mission pits the brilliant embittered operative against an enemy force so vast it could obliterate all of humanity.

"The Space Race had greater consequences than even the Soviets could have guessed, and when they sent the first human ever to the stars, something not quite human followed them back. When a mysterious alien probe lands outside East Berlin and into Soviet control, the Americans send their top spy in to investigate. But as Herring gets ever closer to the truth at the heart of the conspiracy, he may find that the power he so desperately seeks is too dangerous for anyone to control or contain."

"Through comics, I've been able to write space operas, dark religious epics, and superhero stories, and now I can't wait to write a sci-fi horror set within the bleak, creeping dread of the Cold War," Loveness said. "The Iron Curtain surveillance state of East Germany is now far enough removed from us to seem shockingly familiar. It's been humbling to research that world, only to see how many sad parallels of it we still endure today. There's body-horror and sci-fi creeping through the paranoia of the story, but it's also about what it means to be American in a world slipping away from you... a world that was perhaps never truly there to begin with."

Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad."

"It's been extremely gratifying to hear the response from fans who finally have had the chance to read Second Coming for themselves," said writer Mark Russell. "When the controversy broke on the Fox News website and the petition was created to stop its publication, we heard from all the outraged people who hadn't even read the comic. The comic was called blasphemous, inappropriate and irresponsible, so the positive reception this week has been wonderful because I feel like we're all finally being heard."
