THE DARK KNIGHT'S HEATH LEDGER WINS ACADEMY AWARD

Thirteen months after his passing, Heath Ledger won an Academy Award on Sunday night for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Joker in The Dark Knight.

Ledger's father Kim Ledger, mother Sally Bell and sister Kate Ledger accepted the award of his behalf.

"I have to say this is ever so humbling, just being amongst such wonderful people in such a wonderful industry," Kim Ledger said. "We'd like to thank the academy for recognizing our son's amazing work, Warner Bros. and (director) Christopher Nolan in particular for allowing Heath the creative license to develop and explore this crazy Joker character.

"This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath's quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here -- his peers in an industry he so loved."

Cameras caught several of the actors and actresses visibly moved as the Ledger family delivered their speeches.

Ledger is the second actor to win posthumously, following Network's Peter Finch in 1976.

The Dark Knight and Richard King also won for Sound Editing.

Hugh Jackman, the star of the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine, showed off his song-and-dance skills as host of the show. In the opening number, Jackman gave a nod The Dark Knight's fans who thought the film deserved better recognition and ended his performance with an "I am Wolverrrrinnnnnnne!"
