SUPERMAN/BATMAN: PUBLIC ENEMIES

Michael Goguen, producer of the upcoming Superman/Batman: Public Enemies animated movie, said he was excited by the opportunity to adapt Ed McGuinness' comics style to the film.

"It's a completely new look, a different kind of story," Goguen said. "Compared to a lot of stuff we do at Warner Animated, it doesn't have a concrete reality. It almost veers into another dimension where all these people and super-villains are working for Luthor, they come out of nowhere to fight Superman and Batman.

"The comic takes on a mythic quality at that point. They're in a world of heroes and villains but then they're at a real-world setting with the White House. To me that's all interesting to make it all cohesive. There's so many tones that are unusual and it was challenging."

Director Sam Liu said the creators "tried really hard" to translate McGuinness' approach.

"One of the edicts that Bruce (Timm) wanted was to make it look as much to Ed's art as we possible could," Liue said. "LeSean Thomas was the character designer. They're so big and bulky, but I think he did a great job of making it look like Ed McGuinness in an animation cel as best as possible."
