JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED UPDATE

Paul Dini said the episode of Cartoon Network's upcoming Justice League Unlimited animated series that he wrote is "a mystical throwdown between Circe and Zatanna."

"The episode is a lot of fun," Dini told The Continuum at the recent WonderCon in San Francisco. "It's very magical."

It also turned out to be one of his last assignments for Warner Bros. Animation. Dini announced on his web site earlier this week that he is leaving Warner and pursuing other opportunities.

Dini has a history with the Zatanna character, dating back to her appearance in Batman: The Animated Series in an episode titled "Zatanna."

"I always liked the character and liked writing her in Batman and Justice League," he said. "Occasionally, I would throw her into Gotham Girls when I was doing those. I was going to do a series of Vertigo one-shots with the character. I did one, and then due to time and some concerns with DC for the character to appear elsewhere, I had to suspend that. At some point I may go back and write more about her."

Batman will appear in the Justice League Unlimited episode.

"It does kind of get into the relationship with Batman and Zatanna, with friends merging toward something else and then going back to friends again," Dini said. "It does kind of examine their relationship."

Jennifer Hale is providing the voice of Zatanna.

In other Justice League news, the "Starcrossed" movie will be repeated on Saturday, July 31 at 7:30 p.m. It premieres this Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

  • Marvel Comics has announced creation of its first prose imprint -- Marvel Press. Based upon characters in the Marvel Universe, the new line of fiction broadens Marvelšs reach in the fast-growing graphic novel market by penetrating both traditional and new markets. Marvel has hired seven-year veteran of children's and young adult publishing, Ruwan Jayatilleke, formerly of Scholastic, to head Marvel Press and oversee its aggressive launch list with three prose novels scheduled for 2004 and a minimum of 12 for 2005.

"The primary purpose of Marvel Publishing is to create great fiction. Marvel Press is an exciting new way for us to do this, and we are enormously happy to have Ruwan on board to lead the way," said Dan Buckley, publisher.

Mary Jane II will arrive in bookstores in June, followed by a fantasy Wolverine title for adults in October, and then a middle grade Spider-Man title in November.
