CLIFF CHIANG ON DOCTOR 13

Artist Cliff Chiang, whose work is currently featured in Crisis Aftermath: The Spectre, told The Continuum his next project will be a Doctor 13 serial in the upcoming Tales of the Unexpected.

"He's a professional debunker," Chiang said of the character. "He doesn't believe in magic of any sort. It's sort of a reverse X-Files."

Chiang is working with friend Brian Azzarello on the project.

"This is a project no one would expect from either of us," Chiang said. "Two words: Nazi gorillas."

Doctor 13, created in 1951, was last seen in the Seven Soliders: Zatanna mini-series, in which he presumably died.

Chiang said he will begin work on Doctor 13 soon and hopes to update the look of the character a bit.

The Spectre will be the lead feature in the Tales of the Unexpected mini-series. Chiang said the Doctor 13 story will run 16 pages in each issue.

BANDAI GETS WITCHBLADE MANGA

Bandai Entertainment announced Monday at Anime Expo that it has acquired the North American publishing rights for the Witchblade Takeru manga from Top Cow.

The manga series is an adaptation of Gonzo's Witchblade anime television series which is currently airing in Japan.

"This property has been one of our long term goals," Bandai Entertainment's Robert Place Napton said. "We began our publishing relationship with Top Cow with our line of successful Tankobon graphic novels, introducing manga fans to the classic Witchblade and Tomb Raider comic book series -- this original Witchblade manga from Japan is the next step."

Witchblade is the first American comic book to be adapted for the Japanese anime market. Bandai plans to release the series in English following the Japanese edition of the manga, which will be available in Japan later this month. Release date is to be determined but likely to coincide with the release of the Witchblade Anime series in the North America.

"There's great excitement with the incredible response to the Witchblade anime both in Japan and internationally. We're looking forward to working with Bandai Entertainment to bring this manga to the U.S.," said Matt Hawkins, President and COO of Top Cow.
